Yet it is not a guarantee the game actually is going to be good. Yet, I really don't see harm in pre-ordering from developers who have a track record of releasing actually finished, playable games, like Triumph.Įarly access is really another form of pre-order you pay money upfront and hope the Devs listen to your feedback and make a great game. Bad pre-orders are a thing, that I agree on. Pre-order is always a gamble as I stated previously. Still, I think they will uphold their reputation, even now they are swallowed by Paradox. Although as caveat, that was when they were independent. I remember AoW 3 was delayed a few times to iron out some bugs which were spotted just before release. Not like some of the bigger companies who release bug-infested beta builds on release just to make their release date. And regarding this game, I have utmost faith in Triumph, as the way they treated their releases in the past is very good and they have delivered actually finished games on release. Personally for me, when I buy a pre-order, I make a statement to the Developer of "I have faith in your product", getting free stuff is a great side-effect. Enticing people to buy stuff when they get a reward is a tested way to sell stuff., not only regarding games (Kickstarter to name an example). Maybe they use it to generate funding for the final stages of development (which is the case with early access titles too), or they want to get a bearing on to how well the game will sell. The few physical collector's editions released nowadays you can count on one hand.Īs to why companies use pre-orders, I can only guess. The coming of Steam and other digital platforms made that obsolete. In my younger years the games released with cardboard boxes, paper manuals and physical cd's. Physical editions are a thing of the past, only rarely you get some collector's edition with a statue or something, but everything else is digital stuff.
